Introducing Plug-N-Play Excel Dashboard Reports
Create Your Own Dashboard
Reports Quickly and Easily
Just choose your report from a treasure-house
of reports, enter
your data,
and then print your own magazine-quality Excel
dashboard
reports.
by Charley Kyd,
Excel MVP
Today, you can print your own Excel reports like the
ones shown here. I've done most of the work for you.
My Plug-N-Play Excel Dashboard Kit #1 is the quickest, easiest, and
least-expensive way I know for average Excel users to generate magazine-quality Excel dashboard reports.
Plug-N-Play (PNP) versions are available for both Classic Excel (97 - 2003) and New
Excel (2007).
(Separate PNP versions are necessary because the two versions of
Excel are not compatible when it comes to colors. It took me
hours of work to convert one version to the other.)
My PNP dashboards are quick. Easy. High-quality. Inexpensive. Let's take a closer
look at each of
these qualities...
Quick and Easy Reporting
Although my
Excel dashboard book has received rave reviews, some customers
have complained.
"I'm facing a deadline," they've written. "Your book looks
great, but I don't have time to read it today!
"Can't you give me some way to create a good-looking report
right away? Like this
afternoon?"
Finally, I have an answer: Plug-N-Play Excel Dashboard Reports.
Each chart in each report shows 13 months of actual and targeted performance. If you
don't have targets for some of your measures, just enter zero values for
your target data.
After your data is available you should be able to create your first
dashboard reports in a couple of hours. And you should be able to update
your reports each month in about half an hour.
Later, if you care to do so, you can reduce your update time to nearly
nothing by using the techniques I describe in my dashboard book.
To get started with the plug-and-play reports, only three general steps are
needed:
1. Choose your report design. The kit includes a report
workbook with ten different report designs, shown on this page. Several
designs are shown more than once.
Some designs have tables, some don't. Some have many charts, some
have fewer charts. Most are in portrait mode, but two are in landscape
mode.
So choose your design and decide which figure in the worksheet should
display which series of data.
2. Enter your data. Each chart and table in the workbook is
linked to a worksheet that acts as a data-entry form. Just enter (or
copy and paste) your data into these forms for the charts and tables you
want to use.
If you own
Dashboard Reporting With Excel, you can enter the formulas I discuss
in chapters 6 - 8, formulas that link the dashboard workbook to your
Excel database, or to other databases.
3. Choose your color theme. The kit includes fifteen color
themes, shown in the fifteen figures at the right.
Use a simple Excel command to apply any color theme to your report
workbook.
Experiment until you find the one you like best. If you don't like a
particular color in one of the themes, just change it.
Then print your first report.
Monthly, you can follow a simple process to update your report quickly.
Maintaining your report workbook is easy. There are no macros to
break. Nothing is hidden or protected. It's just ordinary Excel.
High Quality Reporting
These reports look like they came from the pages of a business
magazine. Unless you tell your audience, they probably won't
guess that you created the reports in Excel.
The designs are based on the best information I can find about how to
present information so that people can visualize it easily.
These reports use many small charts on one page, a style inspired
by articles from the
Harvard Business Review. This style was designed by working
managers for working managers.
Finally, the reports avoid chart junk, Edward Tufte's term for the
distracting visual candy that many commercial dashboard companies add to
their fancy dashboard reports.
Inexpensive Dashboard Reporting
Because of the value this kit offers, I originally planned to price
it at about $100. But I decided to lower the
price significantly. I want as many people as possible to be able to
generate their own dashboards, and $100 is beyond the reach of many
budgets.
Even so, $100 would have been a bargain:
- Commercial dashboard software typically costs tens of thousands
of dollars and takes many days to install.
- Custom Excel dashboard reports could cost thousands of
dollars for just a few reports. But this kit includes ten report
designs and fifteen color themes, for a total of 150 reports.
- Because none of these solutions would allow you to generate reports in
a few hours, and modify them easily, this kit offers significant benefits that the others
lack.
However, instead of $100, I've set the price at about $.20 per
report, that is, $29.95 for all
150 reports. And the bundle of dashboards for both versions of Excel is
only $44.95.
