Microsoft Excel MVP"It's better to look good than to
feel good, and you look mahvelous, simply mahvelous."
--Comedian
Billy Crystal imitating Fernando Lamas on Saturday Night
Live in 1985.
Like Billy Crystal's well-known routine, Excel was
launched in 1985. First introduced for the Macintosh, Excel
didn't have a PC version until 1989.
When Excel for the PC was ready to go, I was writing columns
about spreadsheets in several national magazines. So
Microsoft invited me to their campus to learn all about
Excel Version 2.2. During my afternoon with the developers, Billy Crystal's lines kept running through my
head:
"You look mahvelous, simply mahvelous!"
I was a financial-management guy, so this might seem like a strange reaction. But you see, my primary job was to help managers better
understand business performance. That's why I loved
Excel's new Graphical User Interface (GUI). Because it would
make my reports and presentations look "mahvelous" it
could make them faster and easier
to read, and, well...more important.
But I had a problem...I knew nothing about graphical
design. I had no idea how to use Excel's new GUI to create
better reports for managers.
So I started to clip examples of good displays from
magazines and newspapers, and save them in a
swipe-file collection. Then, when I had a reporting
idea for a chart or table, I'd swipe a design idea from one of those
clippings and try to duplicate it in Excel.
I still add to my swipe files; I probably have thousands
of clippings.
And I've built up quite a stash of Excel displays,
some of which you can see above. In various reports and stages of
completion, I've got column plots, line
plots, dot plots, trellis ("panel") displays, and other
chart types. I've got big charts and little charts. I've got
single charts, multiple charts, and full-page layouts. Some
chart figures include a lot of text, some include very
little text. And
I also have professionally designed tables, and experimental
designs for Excel report pages.
But at this point, most of my Excel charts and other
tables are gathering digital dust on my hard drive. So I decided to search them out, dust them off, complete them
as necessary,
document them, and share them with you.
Maintain Your Own
Swipe-File Collection
Of High-Quality Excel Charts and Tables
To Use in Reports and Presentations
Twice a month, I'll email you another set of files. Each new
set will contain at least three files: a version for
New Excel, a version for Classic Excel, and a PDF
file with several pages of documentation.
These swipe files are the only source available for a growing
collection of professionally designed Excel charts and
tables. Here are just a few ways you can use them
- Excel--Learn new Excel techniques. Use them
to spark ideas for new displays. Expand your ideas of
what's possible to do in Excel. Save time when you
create new charts.
- Word--Add magazine-quality charts and tables
to your documents.
- PowerPoint--Show professionally
designed charts and tables in your presentations.
- HTML--Add great-looking images of Excel charts and
tables to your web pages.
Because I'm including files for both versions of Excel,
you'll be certain to get a file you can use...both now and
in the future. (If you've recently upgraded to New Excel --
or if you expect to upgrade eventually -- having both
versions will help you to learn Excel's new chart features.)
Learn From My Documentation
When you first subscribe, you'll receive a "Getting
Started" PDF file that explains how to use your swipe files
with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and HTML.
Also, each set of files includes additional documentation. I'll
keep these pages short, because I
want to make each set of files quick and easy to use. But even
though it's short, the documentation is important for
several reasons.
First, it provides quick training. If there's something
important about the substance of a display...or if I use a
special trick to make the display work...or if a chart
requires special settings...or if there's some limitation to
the display...I'll tell you.
I'll also provide quick information about how to change the
display to fit your needs.
Second, the documentation will give you a better idea of
what's possible to do in Excel, both visually and
technically. Soon, your charts and tables will start to look more professional even if you
only skim the documentation and displays when you receive
them.
Third, the documentation is designed
so you can print the first page and put it in a binder.
Then, when you need ideas for displaying data, you quickly can flip through your binder and
find what you need. (I'm also including an Excel file
that contains images of your swipe files. So you'll have two
quick ways to find what you need.)
Here's How My Swipe File Subscription Works
When you subscribe, I'll charge a one-time administrative
fee of $1.00 (which is needed to set up your credit card) and immediately send your first set of Charley's Swipe Files,
with the Getting Started documentation. I'll send your second
set fifteen days later.
If you like your files and you want to continue with
your subscription, you do nothing. If you want to cancel
your subscription, just send me an email message with that
request.
Thirty days after your order, I'll charge your credit
card for the files.
The process repeats itself every 30 days. That is, you
pay only after you've received two more sets of swipe
files; and you can cancel at any time.
These Files Are a HUGE Value!
I was originally going to charge a premium price for this
service. Here's why...
- You'll learn more about Excel charts and formatting by
playing with my many swipe files
than you will by sitting through Excel training classes that
cost hundreds of dollars.
- You'll significantly improve the quality of the your Excel reports,
Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, and
HTML figures.
- You'll save time. Rather than working to make
your ordinary Excel charts and tables look decent,
you'll find professional designs in my swipe files, and
then SWIPE them!
- You'll impress managers, customers, and
clients with the professional appearance of your work.
- The magazine clippings I've accumulated over twenty
years are unique and irreplaceable. It's
impossible for you to get Excel files based on those
clippings from any other source.
- Unlike all my other products, I'm including files
for both versions of Excel in one package. So
you're getting two subscriptions for the price of one!
- You're licensed to use my swipe files at work and at
home. So you're getting two MORE subscriptions for the
price of one!
- If you have clients, you probably can find ways to
offer billable services by combining one or more
of these files and your clients' data.
- If you hired me to create just one of these
files for your company, I'd charge at least $500.
But you'll receive 24 per year!
- Each set includes workbooks for both versions of
Excel. If you were to buy them individually, you'd pay
an average of more than $50 for two sets. But when
you subscribe, you pay only about one-fourth that
price!
In fact, these files offer so much value that I plan to
raises prices after
this introductory offer expires.
Introductory Price For the First 1000
Lucky Subscribers
I want to make sure that my current customers have the
opportunity to subscribe to this unique service. And I don't
want the price to be an issue. So I'm making the
introductory price very low in two
ways.
(If you've just discovered ExcelUser.com, you should know
that I recently emailed my customers about this offer. So
you're lucky to visit when you did.)
First, the introductory price is only $12.95 USD
per month, which is a discount of about 75% off the full
price.
Second, the subscription will be price-protected
until at least 2013. That is, it will remain fixed at $12.95,
even if inflation skyrockets.
In fact, this is such a great price that I'm limiting this
introductory offer to the first 1000 subscribers.
Special Introductory Bonus: Custom Figure
Conversion to Excel
Do you know of a chart or table with a high-quality
design you'd like to use in a report or presentation? Scan the figure, or copy its link, and
then email it to me.
When figures arrive, I'll create Excel versions of the ones I like and add
them to
the queue of files ready to send to subscribers. So the
sooner you order, the sooner I'll look at the figures you
send me, and the sooner you'll receive the Excel version of
your figure as part of your subscription.
Honestly, there's no way that I can set up Excel versions of all charts and
tables I receive. But I'll definitely consider all
files that the first 1000 subscribers send me, and I'll use as many as I can.
But if you're not among the first 1000 lucky subscribers, there's
very little chance that I'll see any figures you send.
Order Now, or Miss Out
The time to act is now. Only the first 1000 lucky
subscribers will be able to take advantage of this great
offer, and it could sell out within days. Here's why...
...I've emailed more than 30,000 customers and
newsletter subscribers
about this offer.
...Many recipients work for large firms with many
employees. If only a few of them email this page's URL to
other Excel, Word, and PowerPoint users in their firm -- which they all should if
they want an inexpensive way to improve their company's presentations -- the 1000-order limit could be
reached VERY quickly.
...These swipe files offer a huge value for a very low price.
Don't wait. Get started with Charley's Swipe Files now. Because
you don't pay for
the files until after you
receive them, your only risk is the initial $1.00
administrative fee.
